Home Organization Room by Room

Getting your home clean and organized can sometimes be a great yet rewarding challenge. Each room in your home poses a different set of requirements, and putting all of your needs into a plan can be quite the chore. The process of cleaning your home from top to bottom can be quite fulfilling. The significant difference in appearance for each room can create a refreshing change in atmosphere that serves as an excellent reward for your hard work. In order to get to this sense of fulfillment, however, you will need to first create a plan to make everything work.

Formulating a plan to clean your entire house can be tricky, but with a few key steps can be easily accomplished. The first and most important step is to identify the specific conditions and requirements attached to each specific room. Before you can tackle your entire house, you need to know how to take down each individual space.

The kitchen is often the most troubling room to clean and should therefore be tackled first. The need for perfection is more significant there than any other space in your home and your plan of action will need to be well thought out. The first step in cleaning your kitchen is taking a detailed inventory. You will need to sort through the various items sprawled throughout your cupboards, pantries and refrigerator. In this process you should clean off every item as well as the shelf, and along with that be sure to throw away those items that or old and ones you never really use. Go through your pots, pans, and other cooking utensils and make sure everything is still in working order. Check all of your condiments and cooking or baking supplies to make sure they are still good. There is limited space in your kitchen for clutter, therefore you need to discard as much as possible. If you find yourself running out of space, try investing in simple organization tools such as extra shelving or storage containers that can hang off of shelves for items such as plastic wrap and aluminum foil. Also consider purchasing a hanging storage device for your pots and pans. An inventory will help considering that the hardest part about getting your kitchen in order is dealing with the amount of items that regularly get used.

The family room can pose similar problems to the kitchen. It is usually a larger space with a lot of frequently used items. Therefore, cleaning it well will require a good inventory and possibly some investment into organizational products. Purchasing a media player with storage space is a great way to store CD's, DVD's and videos neatly. If you have a very large collection of media, then consider purchasing a revolving library. This product is basically a bookshelf designed for media items that can revolve and hold double the amount of items that a normal bookshelf of its size can store. Again, dealing with clutter is the greatest challenge when it comes to cleaning your living room. Inventory your items well so that you can properly adjust to a need that will always be growing.

The bedroom is another room in your home that is dedicated to storage and therefore can sometimes become untidy and unorganized. The challenge in cleaning your bedroom is not necessarily taking inventory and figuring out where to put everything, but instead trying to set it up in such a way that it stays clean and your items are easily accessible. Try investing in storage hutches designed for smaller items such as your cosmetics and jewelry, to keep those items out of the way. Put in extra shelves on the side of your closet to keep the floor space from getting cluttered.

Garages, attics and basements are similar to bedrooms in that they often are used primarily for storage. The challenge in them comes with properly using the space you are given. Since attics and garages are more exposed to harmful elements than the rest of your house, items stored in there are always at a risk. Be sure to cover anything that will be left alone for a long period of time. If items are left uncovered they will take in dust and condensation in their deepest nooks, and eventually may rust or become otherwise damaged. Be sure that you provide quality protection from extreme temperatures as well for these rooms can get very hot in the summer and very cold in the winter. Finally, put important items in a basement up on boards. While it may be unlikely in many cases, basements are always at a threat to flood. Prepare items that could rot if they get wet by elevating them. These tools will make your basic cleaning easier, and your long term projects much more manageable.

The same sort of process of going through the specific individual rooms, and identifying trouble spots, should be done for the rest of the house as well. Try to coordinate the cleaning of specific rooms with times when those rooms will not be needed. Also, try your best to keep at least one or two rooms fully accessible while cleaning the house, so that those not cleaning have a place to be that is out of your way. In the end, cleaning can be a very fulfilling process, but be sure to plan well and prepare for each room specifically while you work to take care of the entire house.

Apartment Decorating

In todays economy everybody is spending less, but wanting more. So how can you get your apartment to have that "Designer look" for less? First, DIY or Do it yourself. You can save tons of money if you can do it yourself. Visit your local book stores or library and youll see hundreds of books on home decorating ideas and do-it-yourself projects.

Start collecting design magazines and clip out the pictures of rooms you like. Study your pictures, observe the different architectural features like windows, fireplaces, recessed ceilings and decorative crown mouldings in the space.

Also note the different furniture styles used within the space, window treatments, upholstery fabrics and floor selections. Study the lighting that was selected, rugs and home dcor accessories. Ask yourself, what did you like most or least about these?

Keep a decorating file on hand to inspire and delight your creative senses. Take the pictures with you when you go shopping to keep you on track with the style you are searching for. Take a trip to your local Lowes and Home Depot stores to see all the DIY books and magazines they carry to help you get started. They also have special classes to teach you how. DIY doesnt sound so scary now, right?

Second, start with one room and third, stick to your budget. Sounds easy? Well, in fact its easier than you think. I think what really hangs people up is that they are overwhelmed by the magnitude of the project. Thats why I say start with one room. Itll be much easier on the budget.

Did I say "budget". Dont fret. Its not such a dirty word. And in this tough economy, even the rich have a budget. You can decorate these days on a very tight budget. Its just learning how to be smart and creative.

(I would like to inject at this point that if you are considering on hiring the help of an expert instead of doing it yourself, make sure to ask the expert for referrals of customers they have helped in the past. Hire only reliable, reputable contractors and ones that guarantee their work. Get a contract in writing. I am not responsible for who you hire. Do your homework!)

However, if you are going to do this yourself, and YES YOU CAN, you will need to evaluate your budget, which will be determined by if you are doing the whole apartment, or room by room. Other factors to consider to stay within your budget are the size of the room, the design theme or style you want to achieve, what needs to be replaced or repaired, and furniture, fixtures or accessories you will need to purchase.

Apartment decorating is fun and exciting. You can make any home spectacular, inviting and comfortable, no matter what the size. So lets get started. First, analyze the room you will decorate and determine what it is that you like and dont like about the space.

Now think about your personal style you would like to achieve in the space. If youre not sure what your personal decorating style is, shop a few furniture stores and designer showcases in your area. They group comfortable settings together called "vignettes", pronounced "vin-yets" in different styles.

Home Decor  Shabby Chic Decorating Ideas for the Kitchen to Use Today!

Are you looking for shabby chic decorating ideas to use in your kitchen? Here are several easy and fun ideas that I have personally used to incorporate shabby chic decorating in that all-important room of the housethe kitchen.

Start by taking an inventory of keepsakes and newer knick knacks that you like and could be used as shabby chic home decor in the kitchen. Keepsakes that I used in my shabby chic kitchen were an old wooden recipe box, vintage measuring spoons, old tin cookie cutters, a miniature iron, an antique compact, a ceramic rose-design dish with lid and serving spoon, a vintage tea set and a couple of small photos in antique frames.

Decide where you will display your items. I used a tall, wrought iron corner shelf with four shelves to display the above items. On each shelf I draped a small lace doily that hung over the edge of the shelf. What I liked best about this collection was that it was tucked into a corner and out of the flow of traffic, and at the same time it was very attractive. It was a wonderful way to display keepsakes instead of having them packed away in a box.

Shabby chic home decor such as vintage bowls, trays and vases can be displayed on counter tops and then brought to life by actually using them. Your family and guests will enjoy the uniqueness of their past and also their present beauty. For most family holiday dinners I bring out the family heirloom serving bowls and trays. What a great way to remember those good ole days!

Kitchen curtains are an excellent way to add that shabby chic look with a unique twist. In place of the traditional cafe curtains, use a valance scarf made out of beautiful shabby chic cotton. Instead of the usual valance scarf draping over a rod use a scroll-type hook, drape the scarf as usual over the hooks and then thread the scarf through each hook from the back to create a puffy circular look to each corner of the window. This is very attractive and unique plus holds the scarf in place. The sides of the scarf hang about half-way down the window for added interest.

A wrought iron chandelier with a distressed finish is a great shabby chic home decor addition over the dining table in the kitchen. It adds flair to the shabby chic decor without being too formal.

Remember, shabby chic decorating can be used in any room of the house. Let your imagination and ingenuity flow to create a beautiful and unique shabby chic look to your home.

History of Bar Stools The Basics

When you understand the history of bar stools, you will see how they have had an impact in the bar and restaurant business over the years and how they continue to play an important role. Bar stools began out of necessity and no one really knows who first invented them.

We can only speculate that they are evolved forms of wooden chairs used in the past. The wooden stools of the past were basically simple wood models with three wooden legs. They were the most basic of models used to provide a person with a place to sit.

Often they were not part of a table setting so they would be pulled up to an extra table or a bar which is how they are believed to have gotten the nickname, "barstools".

While the original bar stools were very simple pieces of necessary furniture, it probably wasn't expected that they would evolve to the popularity that they have today. In the 50s and 60s especially, these tall chairs really took off and could be found in nearly every bar or restaurant around.

This is when they really began to change shape and be found in different sizes, colors, materials and styles. They would only continue to grow from there.

You can also find bar stools in a variety of sizes and heights. You will find out that the height is one of the most important aspects of the bar stool. This is why it's very important for you to measure the table, bar, or countertop properly so you can get the perfect stool.

Bar stools have changed and evolved a lot since their early days. They are now available to suit most any needs or style. This has come about over time as people adapted them to fit different types of needs and situations.

Many people can remember using barstools in our childhood days. You may have sat at the breakfast bar preparing for the day ahead. We may also have experienced bar stools in the local ice cream parlor or even in the barber shop. These fond memories show us how much the bar stool has evolved over time.

The history of the bar stool shows us that they can fit in most any room of the house and even in the business place. Bar stools are functional and fun and have become part of an American culture.

These stools in commercial settings will often be swivel or floor mounted but those used in personal settings are typically not mounted. This has also changed throughout history however and it is acceptable to have any type you want that goes with your theme and dcor.

In the past, bar stools were made of mostly wood but now metal and wood bar stools are very common. Aluminum is a good choice of material for bar stools that can last indoors or out. As the years go by, we expect that the history of bar stools will continue to grow and evolve.

Hints For Adding Grape Kitchen Decor For Your Home

Hints For Adding Grape Kitchen Decor For Your Home

The kitchen is a popular spot for a decorating theme, whether you choose cheerful sunflowers or apples galore. One theme that has become quite popular in recent years is a grape kitchen decor, which lends itself to warm hues and can go from homey to elegant with ease. Grape kitchen decor can encompass a complete fruit ensemble or go Mediterranean, with a wine and grape style.

The colors are rich and accessory possibilities are nearly endless with the popularity of this style today. If you are considering "going grape" in your kitchen, we have some ideas to get you started.

Color Combinations

A grape kitchen decor is all about rich shades of plum and green, but you can also add accents of gold or taupe to provide an elegant back drop. In some cases, wall texturing is a popular finish for the walls in a soft gold or terracotta to pave the way for the Old World charm that is to come.

If a complete fruit theme is the direction you are taking, try a pale green on the walls to provide a soft backdrop for the grapes, apples and pears that will fill up the room. You can choose a color scheme that will be to your liking, whether you like deep, rich jewel tones in a grape and wine kitchen decor or soft pastels.

Other Wall Decor

Grape kitchen decor can begin with a wallpaper border of green vines and lush, purple fruit or dangling wine bottles and glasses. Another option is to cover one wall in bright, cheerful wallpaper that will tie into your grape kitchen decor.

If you prefer, add your own artistic flair with a stencil around the top of your walls or along the top of the backsplash. Prints of wine, grapes and fruit are easy to find, and come in all sizes, shapes and price ranges. Hang a few prints on the wall to warm up the space and add interest to the background.

Accessories

Wrought iron looks lovely with grape kitchen decor, whether it is an ornate wine rack or a practical bakers rack in the corner. The black metal provides a nice contrast to the rich colors, and offers storage and organization possibilities to boot.

Try an oversized wire basket as the centerpiece of the table, and fill it with fruit or greenery for an inviting touch. Plants also work well with grape kitchen decor, whether it is a line of silk plant atop the cabinets, or a few African violets on a wrought iron stand in front of the window.

Keep in mind that themed rooms can lend themselves easily to overkill, so if you opt for grape themed dishes, you might want to keep the rest of the table neutral in coordinating linens and stemware in a single shade. By the same token, if you fill your walls with grape covered wallpaper, provide a break from the pattern with solid-colored window coverings and rugs.

Hide The Gaps With Interior Trim

Hide The Gaps With Interior Trim

Interior Trim is a material carpenters use to hide gaps or spaces where different materials, like drywall; windows and doors, meet. Drywall or the sheetrock is the material that covers the framing of a wall and insulation on exterior walls. The trim that is used to hide the gaps where the drywall and window or the drywall and door meet is the casing. The baseboard is the trim that covers the spaces found where the drywall and the floor meet.

There are many different interior trim designs that a homeowner can choose from. They can be simple, which is comprised of a lone piece of wood or elegant and extravagant which can be made up of a number pieces of wood to form a complicated design. The designs chosen will be dependent on what will match with the home and at the same time the cost. Usually, homes today install the same type of trim all over the home.

Types of Trim:

In the old days the baseboards were considered to be the most important quality of the home and thus the designs of these trim where guests usually met, were the most elegant.

Nowadays, with prices going up it has been more cost efficient to use simple baseboards with one particular design all throughout the house. Although if you decide to have a different one installed it can be easy just as long as you make sure that the replacement you choose is as tall as the previous baseboard so that you will not have to repaint the walls.

Another option if you want to change your board is to build it up. No need to replace the existing board just an addition of a quarter round to the bottom of the board. A quarter round is a one quarter of a circle with one side that sits on the floor while the other side pushes up against the vertical baseboard. This type of trim is usually used to cover tile grout cracks or sheet flooring that curls at the edges.

If you decide to use even more elegant baseboard designs, they consist of 3 pieces of wood at least 6 inches high and 1/2 to 3/4 inches thick. They are what you call the flat plank, a decorative cap molding placed on top of the plank and a round shoe molding found at the base. These are usually made and installed by carpenters.

The casing's role besides accenting your home's windows and doors is to cover the gaps where the drywall and the door jambs meet. There are casings that are tapered where the outside edge is heavier than the inside edge that touches the door or window jamb or it can have the same thickness on both sides which is usually called the square casing. This casing can be decorated with corner blocks and/or plinth blocks.
